Six Fantastic and Simple Fall Activities for your Toddler (that you will love, too!)

You don’t need a lot of home resources to have fun and stay active with your kids during this fall season.

The weather is getting cooler and pumpkin spice is everywhere, it must be Fall!

This change of season brings loads of fun activities and games you can play as a family. We’re all about keeping it simple and easy to keep your toddler entertained. We’ve put together a list of six of our favorite things to do in fall. These activities promise lots of smiles and not a lot of preparation (or clean up!)

Leaf Rubbings

Take advantage of all those gorgeous leaves falling by turning them into art!

Start by going on a long walk, picking up your favorite leaves. Choose a range of colors and sizes.

When you get home, you can simply arrange your leaves down on the table. Place a blank sheet of paper over the top and use the long side of a crayon to rub over and get leaf prints.

Try arranging the leaves in a pattern, make animal shapes, or whatever your child enjoys!

Scavenger Hunt

A Scavenger Hunt is a great activity on its own, or you can combine it with your leaf collecting. Make a list of fall items that you may see on a walk nearby.

Your list could include a red leaf, a feather, a pebble with an interesting shape, a leaf with a hole in it, the biggest leaf you can find, the smallest flower you can find.

You can also add things that you won’t pick up and bring home, such as a butterfly, a spider’s web or you could count the pumpkin decorations in the houses you walk by.

If, like us, you’re in Colorado, we love walking through Fountain Creek Nature Center to find all kinds of nature treasures.

Apple Printmaking

Apples are abundant this time of year and make great stamps!

Cut your apple in half and paint the cut edge to make apple shapes prints. Or get a little crafty and cut them into different shapes. Once the paint is dry you can use them again (two activities in one!). Just take a marker and add details like faces or ears and a tail to make them into animals or funny faces.

Rock Painting

Painting rocks is a great way to get a few walks in plus a quiet indoor activity when the weather is bad. First you need to go for a walk to hunt out your rocks. Then you can paint them at home. As it’s fall, you may want to choose a theme like pumpkins or Halloween.

Once your rocks are painted and dry you can hide them for other kids to find. Take a walk in your local park, or just up your street and tuck the rocks away for another family to find.

Scarecrow Tag

Time to get out and run off that energy! At Soccer Buddies, we are always playing loads of field games. These are great for social skills, physical skills, and serious fun!

Scarecrow Tag is very simple to learn and all you need is a bunch of friends and a safe outdoor area.

Nominate one or two taggers depending on the size of your group.

When they tag a player, the tagged player stands still with arms out like a Scarecrow and legs wide. They can be “released” when another player crawls under them. Players are also “safe” and can’t be tagged when they are under the legs of a scarecrow.

Play until everyone is tagged or just use a timer and swap taggers after a few minutes.

Pinecone Bird Feeders

After all those fall walks, you may be wondering what to do with the pinecones your kids have picked up along the way. Making bird feeders can be sticky but that just adds to the fun!

You’ll need: a pinecone, string, coconut oil and birdseed.

Tie your string around the pinecone first, leaving a long end that you can tie onto a tree branch when your bird feeder is finished.

Then get gloopy! Slightly melt your coconut oil and paint it all over your pinecone. Make sure you get in all the nooks and crannies. Then dip it on your birdseed mix and leave for a few minutes to set.

Tie somewhere near a window so you can look out and see what types of birds are attracted to your feeder.

As always, if you are looking for a GREAT weekend activity that burns energy, fosters imaginative play, and gets your kids socializing, consider joining us for a Soccer Buddies Class!
