Six Apps and Channels to Get You Started with Yoga and Meditation at Home!

“Half of Americans are not getting the sleep they need” – I am sure everyone has heard this statistic before.  With work obligations, family situations, and whirling thoughts about upcoming presentations or long to-do lists, sleep can be elusive at best.  There are, of course, many different types of medications to aid sleep but often, these are not great long-term solutions.

Since a restless mind is often to blame for lack of sleep, meditation and yoga are excellent (and natural!) ways to combat daily stressors.  According to Harvard University’s health blog, “over 55% of people who did yoga found that is helped them get better sleep” and “over 85% said yoga helped reduce stress”.  Plus, there are hundreds of easy to follow videos and apps to guide your yoga or meditation practice at home.  Check out our recommended list of apps and videos below!

Apps – Android and iOS

Headspace: Free to download with in-app purchases plus the option for a premium, monthly subscription.  This app offers guided meditation as well as mini sessions for quick resets and focus aids through moments of anxiety. Headspace also includes specific sleep sessions!

Calm: Free to download; monthly subscription required.  Calm is unique in that it features sleep stories with narration from the likes of Bob Ross or Matthew McConaughey to name a few!

Mindfulness: Free to download with in-app purchases plus the option for a premium, monthly subscription.  This app provides many different guided meditations and also allows you to create personalized meditations that best fit your lifestyle.

YouTube Channels and Online Resources

Yoga with Adriene – Free on YouTube.  Adriene’s easy to follow videos are perfect for beginners and she offers 30-day challenges to help focus on a new flow each day.

Yoga with Kassandra – Free on YouTube.  Another great yoga guide who provides easy to follow videos for viewers.  Bonus!  She features a lot of 10-20 minute videos for those of us with limited time.

DoYouYoga.com – This website is dedicated to everything yoga!  It is free to sign up and has the option to unlock additional workouts with a premium subscription.  There are 30-day challenges, 10 minute yoga shreds, and many different instructors – basically this site makes it easy to discover what practice works best for you!
